As a means to preserve significant open space and shrinking farmlands, municipalities are often acquiring active farms and orchards. As a result, municipalities find themselves overnight thrust in the unfamiliar territory of managing these mixed agricultural-conservation properties and are faced with the combined challenges of delivering cost-effective sustainable management, performing good agricultural and conservation practices, and
providing accessible passive recreational opportunities.
There is interest among some of the people involved with these municipal-owned properties in learning from each other. If you are involved in such a municipal-owned open-space/ agricultural operation please post a follow-up reply with your municipality, brief description of your property, your group's association (Con Com, Open Space Com, Land Trust, or other entity), and contact details for inquiry.
