>>CITY/TOWN ORGANIZERS
... Not a city/town organizer? Contact Cindy Cormier (617-489-3883, cindy.cormier@maccweb.org) to sign up for Biodiversity Days.

Welcome to Biodiversity Days! Thank you for volunteering to organize events in your community. Below are guidelines and resources to help you plan successful events.

Organizer Guidelines

  • Schedule and plan free naturalist-led nature walks (with or without data gathering) for the public.
  • Rally citizen participation by publicizing these walks and related events in the local press: Publicity. Also consider outreach to community groups, public officials, and other media outlets.
  • Involve a local school, classroom or youth organization.
  • Ensure that data (if collected) is entered into the state Biodiversity Database (see below for details).
  • Host a kick-off and/or wrap-up gathering to share experiences and information on the species that were sighted.
  • Help us improve Biodiversity Days by forwarding sign-in sheets and participant surveys to MACC, and completing an online survey.

Planning Tools
Biodiversity Days offers a unique collaborative opportunity for individuals and organizations to work together to benefit their community.

Are you a new city/town organizer? There may be a previous organizer in your community who would like to work with you as a co-organizer or simply provide advice:
Contact info of past city/town organizers

Do you need help finding naturalists to lead field trips? We will connect you with trip leaders who contact us, but you might also talk to local nature clubs, bird-watching groups, dive clubs, etc. for experts. Individuals who participated in past Biodiversity Days may want to take part again:

Managing Community Events: Log in Here
Once logged in, you will be directed to the welcome page.
If you do not have a UserID and password you can register for both from the "Log in Here" page.

From here you can:

Register a Trip
Register a Trip Leader (they can also register themselves through the above registration page)
Manage Trips/Trip Leaders – if you are a city/town organizer, you can keep tabs on all the registered events in your town.
Report Sightings (i.e. enter species observation data into the state Biodiversity Database). This will only become available to you and trip leaders after the date of the trip has passed.

Ideas for Trips
Suggestions for trip titles and themes

We strongly encourage you to focus on existing conservation lands as well as on lands that are on, or adjacent to, parcels that face impending development pressure.

You can download species checklists and information about past Biodiversity Days events from the:
EOEA Biodiversity Information Page.

Some areas useful for planning trips include:

Browse and download Checklists of common coastal or inland species
Search “Species list for a town” – see what’s already been found in your community.

Under “Results”, go to “Results from the database for a trip, regardless of date” to see what areas in your town have been visited during past trips.
