How to Organize a Biodiversity Days Nature Walk

Lovells Island BioBlitz
Biodiversity Days 2005

Welcome to Biodiversity Days! Thank you for your interest in organizing a nature walk for a school or elsewhere in your community. Below are guidelines and resources to help you plan successful walks.

Organizer Guidelines

  • Schedule and plan free naturalist-led nature walks (with or without data gathering) for the public.

  • Crystal Spring Center Biodiversity Days 2005

Rally citizen participation by publicizing these walks and related events (newletters, posters, flyers, etc): Also consider outreach to community groups, public officials, and other media outlets.
  • Involve a local school, classroom or youth organization.
  • Ensure that data (optional – only if collected) is entered into the state Biodiversity Database.
  • Consider enhancing your event by hosting a kick-off and/or wrap-up gathering to share experiences and information on the species that were sighted.
    How to Organize a Walk:
  • Determine who will lead the walk(s)
  • Determine where and when the walk(s) will take place
  • Determine what the focus of the walk(s) will be (i.e. birds, flowers, trees, general, etc.)
  • Publicize the walk(s)
  • Register the trip leader
  • Register the walk(s) using trip leader’s user ID and password
  • Conduct the walk(s)
  • Report species seen on walk (if recorded). This will only become available to you and trip leaders after the date of the trip has passed.
  • Inform the Massachusetts Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Program of any rare species observed using the Rare Species Data Report Form(s)
