Advanced Certificate Training

MACC introduced the advanced component to our Training Program for Massachusetts Conservation Commissions in March of 2002. A complement to our six-year-old basic training course, Fundamentals for Conservation Commissioners, the Advanced program will familiarize participants with advanced legal and technical aspects of the work of Massachusetts Conservation Commissions, as well as treat concepts and topics covered in the Fundamentals course in greater depth.

Prerequisites

Anyone meeting one or more of the following criteria may enroll in the program:

• Completion of Fundamentals for Conservation Commissioners
• At least five years service as an appointed voting member of Massachusetts Conservation Commission (or cumulative service on several Commissions)
• At least three years experience as a professional administrator or agent for a Commission or Commissions in a position that is at least half time.

Prerequisites may be waived in individual circumstances upon demonstration of a relevant degree and broad experience in the work of Conservation Commissions.

Certificate Requirements

Credits for an Advanced Certificate are obtained through a combination of required** and MACC elective† and non-MACC* elective sessions.

The required sessions** are three MACC Advanced Core Days, listed below. These full-day workshops will focus on advanced wetlands and open space topics in the areas of Wetlands and Open Space Law; Effective Conservation Leadership for Your Community; and Science and Technology.

Note: The "Wetlands and Open Space Law" core day debuted in the fall of 2002. "Conservation Leadership" was first presented at the 2003 Annual Environmental Conference, and the final core day, "Science and Technology", was introduced on May 31st, 2003. Core days will be presented subsequently at regular locations and/or at the Annual Environmental Conference.

MACC programs qualifying for elective credit include: Fall Conference, designated Annual Environmental Conference workshops, and other designated MACC programs.

Certain pre-approved programs* co-sponsored by MACC or offered by other organizations, agencies or individuals will also qualify for elective credit. There is no time limit for completion of the certificate program.
