Is it possible to manage your forested land to improve forest resilience AND benefit wildlife while covering your costs - or maybe even making some money?

At Opacum Land Trust’s Maurice Morneau conservation property in Southbridge and Dudley, we are emphasizing the methods of managing forest land in ways that most benefit the land owner and the natural habitat.  See how a conservation organization and private landowners like you or your neighbors can take active steps to make woodlands more productive, more resilient to climate change, income producing, and still improve the quality of wildlife habitat.

This walking tour will examine challenges to forest health and ways to improve it while observing a recent timber harvest.  We will also view a 3-acre habitat improvement cut Opacum made to specifically diversify the forest cover for a greater variety of animal species.  In addition, we will take a close look at several types of invasive plant species and how they are damaging the natural flora and fauna, and discuss the range of options needed to contain and manage them.

The walk will be led by licensed consulting forester Scott Gerrish, who will be joined by Ed Hood, Executive Director of Opacum Land Trust, Kate Marquis, DCR Service Forester, and Lisa Hayden of the New England Forestry Foundation.

The walk will be over rough terrain and cover approximately 2 miles.  Please dress appropriately.   Precautions against ticks are encouraged.

Reservations are required.  RSVP by July 7th to Ed Hood at ehood@opacumlt.org or leave a message at 508-347-9144, ext. 2, with your name and how we can contact you with directions.
