Massachusetts Association of Conservation Commissioners, Executive Director

The Executive Director is the Chief Executive Officer of the Massachusetts Association of Conservation Commissions (MACC).  The mission of the MACC is the education of and support for Conservation Commissions. In addition, MACC works for strong, workable, science-based laws and regulations regarding wetlands, other water resources, open space, and biological resources. The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors, and is responsible for the organization's consistent achievement of its mission and financial objectives. In program development and administration, the Executive Director will:

Specific responsibilities:

  1. Assure that the MACC has a long-range strategy which achieves its mission, and toward which it makes consistent and timely progress.
  2. Provide leadership in developing program, organizational and financial plans with the Board of Directors and staff, and carry out plans and policies authorized by the board.
  3. Maintain official records and documents, and ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations.
  4. Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field.

In relations with staff, the Executive Director will:

  1. Be responsible for the recruitment, employment, and release of all personnel, both paid staff and volunteers.
  2. Ensure that job descriptions are developed, that regular performance evaluations are held, and that sound human resource practices are in place.
  3. Promote active and broad participation by volunteers in all areas of the organization's work.
  4. Encourage staff and volunteer development and education, and assist program staff in relating their specialized work to the total program of the organization.
  5. Maintain a climate which attracts, keeps, and motivates a dedicated staff.

In finance and development, the Executive Director will:

  1. Work with the staff, Finance Committee, and the board in preparing a budget; see that the organization operates within budget guidelines.
  2. Ensure that adequate funds are available to permit the organization to carry out its work through grants, corporate sponsorship, and fundraising appeals.
  3. Jointly, with the president and secretary of the board of directors, conduct official correspondence of the organization, and jointly, with designated officers, execute legal documents.

In education and advocacy, the Executive Director will:

  1. Work with the Vice President for Advocacy, Advocacy Committee, its subcommittees and the Board to maintain visibility of the organization and identify, focus on, and develop issues.
  2. Serve as MACC's registered lobbyist and meets registration/reporting requirements.
  3. Foster and maintain relationships with key agency heads, environmental legislators, and other organizations.
  4. Work with the Annual Environmental Conference Committee to determine the conference schedule, workshop topics, speakers, and moderators.
  5. Work with the Fall Conference Committee to determine and develop the topic, establish the agenda and secure speakers.
  6. Work with the Education Coordinator and the Training Program Committee to assure continued success of the program through instructor recruitment and training, scheduling, funding, and periodic updates to curriculum content and materials, as appropriate.

Town of Otis, Conservation Agent

Available immediately, part-time (10 hours/week) position for a conservation agent to assist busy Conservation Commission with applicant inquiries, site visits and occasional paperwork related to the administration of the Wetlands Protection Act.

Requirements include attendance at one to two evening meetings per month and office hours one half-day per month.  Remaining time is flexible, and can be scheduled to accommodate needs of applicant.

Relevant experience required in the fields of wildlife conservation, resource protection and/or environmental science.  Additional funded training available.

Town of Needham, Director of Conservation

Full-time with excellent benefits; starting salary $56,833.
