Wicked Awesome Puddles. Fundamentals of Vernal Pools Ecology and Protection

Overview:

Vernal pools are wicked awesome habitats found throughout Massachusetts. These ephemeral ponds provide critically important habitat for a remarkable diversity of wildlife species. Massachusetts has some of the most robust protection for vernal pools in the nation, yet they are nonetheless often lost or impacted by development. We will take an overview of the ecological functions and values of vernal pools with an eye toward understanding the importance of protecting them, talk about recognizing vernal pools in the wild, and whet your appetite at the regulatory smorgasbord that is vernal pool protection.

Our Presenter:

Matt Burne is the Director of Conservation with the Walden Woods Project and was formerly employed by the MA Division of Fish & Wildlife’s Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Program as the Vernal Pool Ecologist. Matt is the Vice-President of the non-profit Vernal Pool Association which works to promote the study, appreciation, and protection of vernal pools. He provides vernal pool outreach and education to the public, conservation commissioners and the regulated community, natural resource agency personnel, and the scientific community.
