Massachusetts Association of Conservation Commissions (MACC)

MACC is a statewide non-profit 501(c)(3) organization based in Belmont, Massachusetts. We are dedicated to protecting wetlands, open space, and biological diversity through education and advocacy. We were founded in 1961 and incorporated in 1978.

We provide environmental education and training and assistance for more than 2,000 conservation commissioners throughout Massachusetts who administer the Massachusetts Conservation Commission Act and Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act in their communities, protect and preserve wetlands and open space, own and manage conservation lands, and educate and advocate for environmental protection locally. Municipal and state staff and officials, consultants, lawyers, and other interested people also participate in our environmental education and training programs.

We are a leading advocate for environmental protection. No other organization in Massachusetts consistently brings to the table our experience, knowledge, and support for conservation commissions and for smart local protection of wetlands and open space. We participate on government advisory committees on environmental issues, advise and comment on proposed laws and regulations, and file amicus briefs in important cases, among our advocacy activities.

Our Annual Environmental Conference is the largest annual environmental conference in New England. Each year more than 700 conservation commissioners and agents, local, state, and federal officials and staff, lawyers, consultants, and environmental advocates come together for environmental training and education workshops, exhibits, a keynote speaker, a book sale, President's reception, and to network with people from across the state who are working to protect wetlands, open space, and biological diversity in the communities in which they live and work. At each Annual Environmental Conference we present our prestigious Environmental Service Award to deserving recipients.

We offer a variety of specialized environmental education programs, including our Fundamentals for Conservation Commissioners multi-unit certificate training program and various workshops that we offer frequently across the state and via webinar. We hold a Fall Conference annually, providing information and education on one important environmental issue that people can use in their community.

Protecting Wetlands and Open Space: MACC's Environmental Handbook for Massachusetts Conservation Commissioners, now in its tenth edition, is the indispensable resource for those serving on, working with, or appearing before conservation commissions, and for others who want the definitive resource on wetlands and open space protection in Massachusetts. We also wrote and offer the Massachusetts Runoff, Erosion & Sediment Control Field Guide, essential for those who want to eliminate sediment runoff to water resources, the largest source of water pollution in the U.S. We provide the Conservation Quarterly to our members, twice monthly eMACC emails on education and advocacy, Action Alerts, a thorough website that includes an Electronic Resource Library, Conservation Connections (an online forum), job postings, wetland bylaws and ordinances, and other educational materials.

MACC members receive advice and guidance by calling or emailing the MACC Helpline at 617-489-3930 or

Our funding comes one-third from conservation commission dues; one-third from earned income from conferences, training workshops, advertising, and exhibits; and one-third from individual and corporate memberships and donations and foundation grants. We welcome your membership and your financial investment in our work!
